What Hal Prince’s Death Taught Me

The theatre community is mourning the death of a true MASTER!  Hal Prince died last week, at the age of 91.  His contribution to the theatre is nothing short of legendary.  He was a highly accomplished artist in so many ways.

Just in case you’re not familiar with him, here is a rundown of some of his accolades:

  • The Phantom of the Opera
  • West Side Story
  • Fiddler on the Rood
  • Company
  • Sweeney Todd
  • Evita
  • Cabaret

And more…

Now that’s what you call a LEGACY!! Professionally, he will always be known as a master Director and Producer.

What struck me the most this week is the number of theatre friends who shared their genuine love and adoration for him.  Mr. Prince was brilliant, talented, super funny, loving, generous, and kind.  In fact, Mr. Prince used to take the time to write handwritten notes congratulating people on their opening nights.  He also personally sent emails saying, “Thank you for all that you do” and acknowledging an actor’s artistry in auditions by saying, “Great job!  Thank you for coming in.”

Hal Prince’s death taught me the value of truly being mindful of the work that I create, the lives that I touch, staying in my zone of genius, becoming brilliant, and achieving my own mastery.  It was a perfect reminder to stop and personally say, “Thank you’s“ “Great Job” & “Congratulations” to my fellow artists.  People will remember that.

His death taught me the power of crafting my legacy now.  It taught me to think about how I want to be remembered.  It taught me to play a MUCH bigger game.  And it also taught me to ask myself, “Is what I’m doing RIGHT NOW in total alignment to my living legacy?”  It was a beautiful wakeup call, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

So what about you?  What are you doing to live your legacy now?  How do you want to be remembered?  Are you working towards it RIGHT NOW?

One thing I know for sure is if you don’t pursue your living legacy on purpose and on your terms, you will become a pawn in someone else’s story.  Ain’t nobody got time for dat!

Rest In Paradise, Mr. Prince.  Thank you for all that you’ve done.

Much love and abundance,

Keenah 💋
